SAB Multi-Currency Card

As part of Visa’s CEMEA Innovation team, I led the design and concept development for Umlaty — a multi-currency prepaid card and digital wallet experience launched by Saudi Awwal Bank (SAB). Umlaty empowers customers to seamlessly manage multiple currencies in one card, making it easier to travel, shop online, and spend globally without hidden fees.

From initial product concept definition to final UI design, I delivered the full end-to-end experience, positioning Umlaty as one of SAB’s flagship digital payment offerings.

Challenge

In Saudi Arabia, the demand for flexible, travel-ready payment products was growing, driven by increasing international travel, e-commerce growth, and fluctuating exchange rates. SAB wanted to create a proposition that:

  • Simplified multi-currency management for everyday and travel use

  • Reduced friction for customers loading, converting, and spending foreign currency

  • Positioned SAB as an innovator in consumer payments within the GCC

Approach

Research & Insight Gathering

  • Mapped out key user personas (frequent travelers, online shoppers, remittance senders)

  • Identified primary friction points in existing multi-currency products (complex currency switching, lack of rate transparency)

Experience Design

  • Designed a centralized currency wallet for managing multiple balances in SAR, USD, EUR, GBP, and more

  • Built real-time exchange rate visibility into the core UI

  • Created low-friction onboarding with KYC integration

  • Added in-app controls for card freezing, currency switching, and spend tracking

Visual Identity & UI

  • Applied a clean, mobile-first design with clear visual hierarchy for quick decision-making on the go

  • Incorporated behavioral design cues to encourage optimal currency use

Outcome

  • Flagship Product: Positioned SAB as an early mover in multi-currency payment solutions in the GCC

  • Scalable Framework: Delivered a UX/UI framework that can be extended to new currencies and features

  • Customer-Centric Design: Created an intuitive experience designed around real-world use cases of travel, online shopping, and global spending

My contribution

  1. Product Concept Definition: Shaped the vision, features, and positioning of Umlaty alongside Visa Innovation stakeholders

  2. Research: Conducted desktop research and targeted field interviews to identify user pain points and competitive gaps

  3. Experience Design: Created all UX flows for onboarding, currency loading, conversion, and payment

  4. UI Design: Designed the full digital interface, aligning SAB’s brand with modern, intuitive usability patterns

  5. Stakeholder Facilitation: Led cross-functional workshops with SAB and Visa teams to align product strategy with technical and operational realities

Umlaty was more than just a card — it was a complete digital experience, designed to remove friction from global payments and empower customers with choice, transparency, and control. By aligning product strategy, research, and design execution, we created a solution that set a new standard for multi-currency payments in the region.
